8 Self Care Ideas to Lift You Up

Whether you are feeling down, want a pick me up, or are just ready to maximize what you want out of life, here are eight easy and effective self care ideas to give you that boost you are looking for.

Take some time when you need it and go through these. Some take some thought and time and some take just a few seconds, but they all work together to lift you up and help you get the most out of your day (and life)!

The #1 Self Care Idea of Them All: Gratitude Affirmations

I probably could have numbered gratitude affirmations 1-10 because they are just that important to getting your mind right, appreciating everything in your life, and gearing yourself toward happiness and success.

If you have anything specific you want to manifest into your mind and your life, go ahead and practice some gratitude affirmations for those things now. For example, let’s say you want to have more success in school or at work. You might try something like this:

  • I am so grateful that I am a brilliant (man/woman).
  • I am so grateful that I am a successful (man/woman).

Then let inspiration flow and go from there. Or stop there if that’s good enough for you.

If there is nothing specific on your mind, then you can try out one of the greatest gratitude affirmation exercises around.

Simply take a look around the room you are in right now. Say in your mind that you are grateful for the first five things you see. They may seem silly at first, but not once you start your practice. For example:

  • I am so grateful for this floor.
  • I am so grateful for this desk.

And so on.

You will start to feel appreciation for the small, everyday things you take for granted and never think about.

These gratitude affirmation practices are sure to get your mind going in the right direction and feeling positive and hopeful.

2. Make a tea with a delightful scent

There is something about a great aroma that just lifts the mood. Have some fun with this, pick out one of your favorites, and sip away.

Besides, taking the time to make a special tea for yourself, sipping it slowly and enjoying it just screams self care.

Just don’t sip on chamomile. We’re not looking to get sleepy quite yet.

3. Add in some physical movement

It’s a good thing we’re not sleepy yet. Because it’s time to move.

We all need exercise every day. Studies have shown that muscle strength can protect against mortality, so it’s not a huge leap to see that exercise can help enliven us.

Sitting dormant in the doldrums on the other hand, probably not so much.

So sneak in some exercise breaks throughout the day. I like to do something every hour (or sometimes more frequently) in what I’ve come to call intermittent work.

Sneaking in regular exercise or movement breaks throughout the day is a great way to keep yourself fresh, your mind working at its best, and your creativity flowing. There is something about taking a break to exercise or take a quick walk that seems to synthesize what your brain has learned up to that point, and release it to reveal creative thoughts and ideas to you.

You may even remember some things that should be on your to-do list but you forgot!

In any case, you’re mind will feel refreshed and so will you.

4. Force a smile!

We’re entering the “that makes me feel silly” portion of the list, but trust me, you have to do these next two.

When you’re by yourself, just force yourself to smile.

And keep doing it.

Don’t let go! Keep that smile on your face.

You might feel silly, but that’s okay, you’re by yourself anyway so who cares.

After a while your constant smile will tell your body “hey, I’m smiling, so that means I’m happy”. Your happiness will start to increase in turn. You might even start to giggle after a while. Do it in the mirror for some extra effect.

It’s a wonderful feeling and you have to try it.

5. Dance like a weirdo

Continuing on in the theme of making you feel like a weirdo is dancing like a weirdo!

Again, this falls in the category of things you should do by yourself.

Or not. Let your weirdo flag fly if that’s your thing. You be you.

But give this one a try, like forcing a smile. Mirrors are good but not necessary.

Just start moving your body around. We’re not looking for technical proficiency here, which is great news for me personally.

Your body understands dancing as a happy, jubilant act just like it understands a smile as a happy act. Dance long enough, even better dance like a weirdo, and that feeling gets even stronger. You might feel similar feelings as you do when forcing a smile.

PLUS, it’s movement, so it can double as your exercise if you stay at it long enough. Give it a try and have some fun.

6. Close your eyes and meditate – even if you don’t know how

Okay, let’s get a little more serious now.

Meditation is such an amazing, wonderful, relaxing, often insightful and refreshing practice that we should all try it at least just a little bit. Every day if we can.

Part of the challenge with meditation is it can seem intimidating if you’re not experienced, or a little fish-out-of-water for some due to its stereotypical imagery.

Rest assured, you do not need to be a yogi to meditate. You do not need to do so barefoot, or in nature, or with crystals and essential oils.

All you need is you.

If you’re new to it, just practice for a minute every day. Practice sitting in a comfortable position, with your eyes closed, and focus on breathing or the back of your eyelids.

You don’t have to be a meditation master to enjoy the benefits. For the purposes or relaxing, calming your mind and your racing thoughts (there are so many more in there than you realize), just focusing on it for a minute a day and expanding out from there will yield great benefits.

7. Find out what inspires you, and commit!

Taking back control of your life in your own best interests is the ultimate form of self care.

So now it’s time to start taking control of our lives, finding out what we want, and going out there with a plan and getting it!

If you are feeling unfulfilled in your life, like there is something missing that you want to be doing or achieving but just aren’t or haven’t, this is for you.

The good news is it is never too late to start and get after your goals.

So, if you are feeling uninspired, think about what inspires you, what gets your juices flowing, what you want to do or what you want to be really good at.

Then make the decision to commit to it!

Simple as that. Once you commit to it, you can make the plans to make it a part of your life and achieve what you want to achieve.

And once you do that, you will immediately feel uplifted with the excitement of knowing that you are living the life you want that best suits you.

8. Create a success planner

A proper success planner will cut through all the nonsense and BS you might ever feed yourself and show you what you are truly going to accomplish in your life, not what you have tricked yourself into believing you will accomplish.

That is because your success planner will show you exactly what kind of success you will get out of life based on what you are putting into life.

If the things you wanted to commit to are not on there, you shouldn’t expect much success with them.

Wow, this sounds a little negative for something that is supposed to lift you up, right?

The positive side is, your success planner tells you the truth. This means, when you take control of it and use it to your advantage, you can virtually guarantee your future success in whatever you have committed yourself to on the planner.

Once you properly account for your goals on your success planner and and you can easily see your future success in front of you, it is impossible to not feel excited and lifted up.

So, lock in that feeling of excitement you generated in #7 and commit to your new goals on your new success planner. As long as you stay committed, which a success planner will help you to do, you can see that success start to come in each and every day.
